If only for the birds: Riverbanks Zoo

Come feed the little birds, show them you care
And you'll be glad if you do
Their young ones are hungry
Their nests are so bare
All it takes is tuppence from you
-from the song Feed the Birds written by the Sherman brothers for "Mary Poppins"

If you only saw the bird aviary and spent some time feeding and observing the birds, you'd go home happy. Besides, how else would a kid ever discover that a group of flamingos is called a "flamboyance", they really do have knobbly knees and stand on one foot, and they really are bright pink.  BUT, that is just one marvelous aspect of Riverbanks Zoo and Gardens in Columbia, SC.
At just over an hour north of Charleston, this zoo is worth every penny of an annual family membership. A basic family membership is  $79 and you can easily recoup that in two visits (click here to consider all that membership privileges offer). Did I mention there's an awesome rope climbing challenge, a zip line adventure, the beautiful gardens, and of course all the animals? Set a full day aside and visit the Riverbanks Zoo! (visit the links provided below to get a good idea of what to expect on your day trip to the zoo)

Linking with this post Part IPart II, and Part III for picture stories of all the parts of this unique zoo.
