Thanksgiving musings 2013

a recipe-

This great recipe for cranberry sauce just came to me in the mail via my Aunt in England and I can't wait to try it this Thanksgiving:

Cranberry and Pear Sauce

  • 1 cup fresh cranberries
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • juice and rind of one medium orange
  • 2 ripe pears, peeled, cored and finely chopped
  • 3 Tbls port
Method:
  1. Place the fresh cranberries, sugar, water, orange juice and rind into a large saucepan. Cook over medium heat for 10 minutes, or until the cranberries begin to burst open (fun for kids to watch).
  2. Add the chopped pears and simmer for a further 30 minutes, or until soft, then stir in the port.
  3. Carefully pour into sterilized jars and once cooled seal the lids tightly.

a book-

We found this cool book about the origins of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade and it is fascinating.

a movie-

At Thanksgiving, I always think of my favorite movie Giant (with Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, and James Dean) and the scene with Pedro the turkey. Watch it here

We are looking forward to catching the new movie Frozen over the Thanksgiving break.


on our table-

This prayer die is a staple on our table. Kids can give it a roll and say their own Thanksgiving prayer. We found ours locally here in the store at Mepkin Abbey.
