Life and Art in Charleston 105 - Recycled Art

Every time we visit the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, SC we are blown away by the details in this sculpture. In our travels, we have seen this reoccurring theme of recycled art and it is always inspiring to marvel at the imagination people have in creating something so life-like. Kids are also intrigued by the use of everyday junk to create something priceless. We saw this sort of recycling in the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California...

(that's a fish at home in that boot). We found an organization in Bandon, Oregon devoted to recycling beach debris into the most amazing art...

Which brings us back full circle to Charleston where there is a recycled art sculpture right here on Shem Creek...

It's a masterpiece! This is Pete the Pelican and he was created by students from the School of the Arts. If you haven't seen it yet check it out at the new Shem Creek Park.
