fathers and daughters

" On behalf of every man
Looking out for every girl
You are the god and the weight of her world"
- from Daughters, by John Mayer

I have no idea what it feels like to have a daughter, but I certainly know what it feels like to be a daughter. When I was 9 (the age my boys are now) I remember walking briskly down the Mall near Buckingham Palace in London, England on a family vacation and, my hand held cupped in my father's, I raced along side to keep up with his 6'6'' stride, refusing to break pace and be forced to let go. I remember what I was wearing, the trees, and the summer sun; a memory etched forever. These little moments are everlasting for girls and their fathers.

Take a moment to single out your daughter with all of your attention and honor her with the question "Can I have this dance?"

  1. Well now, this is beautifully written. You can claim one of mine anytime. The eldest idolizes you anyway ;)
